Classes

Seven things run out of this room. You do not have to pick one on day one. Turn up, watch a round, then decide. You will be sore. Bring water.

Pay as you go from £7 a session. See all prices.

  1. A coach holding Thai pads while a student throws a right kick.

    01

    Muay Thai

Fists, elbows, knees and shins. Your first month is footwork, guard, and learning not to flinch when something comes at your head. Pads and bags first. Light sparring when your coach says you are ready, not before.

Who it’s for Complete beginners upward. No experience, no kit needed to start.

Led by Alex Fenwick, Head Coach. Former professional, fought in the UK and abroad. a multiple regional champion and a European Cup winner. Trained and fought out of a well-known camp abroad.

Also coaching Danny Rowe. Professional Muay Thai fighter, highly ranked before retiring from competition.

  1. 02

    Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Ground fighting. Grips, then position, then submission — in that order, always. It is chess played by tired people. You will tap a lot in your first year. That is the class working, not you failing.

Who it’s for Anyone. Size and strength matter least here, which is the entire point.

Verify. Not on the 2026 timetable or price list. Confirm it still runs.

  2. 03

    Boxing

Hands only. It looks like the simplest thing in the building and it is the hardest to do well. Jab, feet, head movement, breathing. Rounds on the bag, rounds on the pads, conditioning at the end when you have nothing left.

Who it’s for Anyone who wants to be fitter and hit properly. Tuesdays, 6:30pm.

Led by Sam Whitaker. Experienced amateur boxer, undefeated as a professional.

  3. 04

    Wrestling

Takedowns, sprawls, scrambles, getting back to your feet. The least glamorous class we run and the one that changes the most fights. Expect to be tired inside ten minutes and to keep going anyway.

Who it’s for Strikers who keep getting taken down. Grapplers who want to choose where the fight happens.

Led by Marek Kowal. Former national champion and a fully qualified wrestling coach.

  4. 05

    Krav Maga

Self-defence, not sport. No points, no rounds, no referee. We drill getting out of grabs, off the wall, off the floor, and away. Simple movements you can still perform when your hands are shaking.

Who it’s for People who want to get home, not win a trophy. Saturdays, midday.

Led by Tomas Varga. Fully qualified Krav Maga coach.

The coaching team of Oakvale Martial Arts Academy standing together in the training room.

The academy is on Mill Lane, off Eastgate, in Oakvale.

Nobody here is going to sell you a grading certificate. You train, you get better. That is the whole arrangement.

Walking into a gym for the first time is the hardest part of the entire thing. Ring Alex first if that helps. He will tell you what to bring and when to arrive.
